Design and Planning – Foundation Course Set B
13, 14 and 15 October 2009
Day ONE
Design & National
Planning Policy & Guidance - Morning Session 9.30 -1
This
session will explore the wealth of policy available to help you achieve good
design, how they relate to each other and using policy to negotiate design
improvements. It will include discussions, case studies and a quiz to see where
policies sit and how they relate to design.
Creating Design Policies and
Documents - Afternoon Session 2 - 5.30
This
session will look at how to write or commission the design elements of key
planning documents.It will cover
drafting area plans, how to get the right people for drafting policy work such
as SPDs, getting to the nub of ‘visioning’ masterplanning and design codes, as
well as consulting, adopting and monitoring design objectives. The session will
include discussions and an exercise to write and appraise policies for a
particular area.
Day TWO
Design & Planning
Decisions - Morning Session 9.30 - 1
This
session will look at how to assess and consider the design quality of schemes
when negotiating, recommending decisions and drafting conditions or reasons for
refusal. Looking at structuring
assessments, tools you can use, design & access statements and how to
respond to concerns through consultation. The sessions will include ‘have a go’ elements
to help understand key issues.
Post Committee Actions &
Design at Appeal - Afternoon Session 2 - 5.30
This
session will look at how to best use statements and how to present design
information at appeal. It will address: does
design stop at planning? How to use and
set conditions and their relationship to outline applications, what will the inspector
be thinking about? This session will look at case studies and include a mock
appeal hearing.
Day THREE
Inclusive Design &
Planning - Morning Session 9.30 – 1
This
session will consider how the needs of all social groups, from age to
disability are addressed through the planning and development systems. It will provide practical tips for planning
professionals when considering issues of access and inclusion. This session will look at case studies and
practically assess how inclusive the end result will be.
Design a Scheme - Afternoon
Session 2 - 5.30
This
session will give you the opportunity to use what you have learnt throughout
the course to design a scheme. Working
in groups you will assess context, consider how the structure of an area could
be improved, develop your ideas for individual buildings or blocks, presenting
your ideas graphically and verbally. Assess
the viability of other schemes.

- if you work for a London
borough please talk to your urban design team as they will hold the central
bookings form for your authority. If you work for TfL, the LDA or CABE
you don't need to pay for sessions.
