Urban Design & Streets: Foundation Course Set B
9, 10 & 12 February 2010
Day ONE What is the public realm and why does it matter? Morning 9.30-1 This session will look at the importance of public spaces in our city to our health, happiness and prosperity.It will cover different types of public space, looking at are they fit for purpose, designing for looks, function or both?Why does quality matter and reviewing recent research on design in the public realm.The session will include visits to local public places to assess how they are designed, used and managed. Inclusive Design and the public realm - Afternoon Session 2-5.30 This session will consider how the needs of all social groups, from age to disability are addressed through our streets and transportation design and management systems. It will cover how to balance the conflicting needs and perspectives of users and the impact on street design and usage; how to negotiate and explain the need for inclusive and accessible public spaces and what access and inclusion means in practice to public realm planning.It will include assessing case studies, practical tips and techniques.
Day TWO Understanding the safety, risk & liability in the public realm - Morning Session 9.30-1 This session will explore some of the myths and truths around this important issue.It will work through key research and look at real case law and projects.It will cover the main legislative acts, how to use safety audits and risk assessments, what you think might create risk and will also include an exercise to assess how risky a scheme really is. How to use policy, regulation and guidance - Afternoon 2-5.30 This session will look at the range of national and London specific documents that can influence the design of any highway, streets or public realm scheme including Local Transport Notes, the Manual for Streets, DMRB and the Mixed Priority Routes report.Looking in depth at what they say and the thinking behind them; it will cover the appropriate application of new ideas and will include an exercise to apply the principles discussed to a real scheme.
Day THREE Furnishing the Street – Street Clutter or Street Essentials? Morning Session 9.30-1 This session will review the different types of street furniture and discuss when they are needed, where to put them and how to maintain them.It will cover best practise, guidance and design options, looking at upfront and whole-life costs, ensuring they last and maintenance and preventing clutter, including a ‘de-cluttering’ game – seeing who can clean up our streets.Design a scheme - Afternoon Session 2-5.30 This session will give you the opportunity to use what you have learnt throughout the course to design a scheme.In groups you will assess the existing context of an area, consider how the structure of an area could be improved, develop your ideas for new or improved routes, presenting your ideas graphically and verbally.You will assess the viability of other schemes.

If you work for TfL, the LDA or CABE you don't need to pay for sessions.
