Masterclasses are for urban designers and built environment professionals who understand core urban design issues and practices and wish to find out about new research, exemplar schemes and design solutions others are coming up with.
The report ‘Building in Context’ was published jointly by English Heritage and CABE in 2001. it called for a high standard of design when development takes place in historically sensitive contexts. It explained the need to examine the context for any proposed development using character appraisal to ensure any new scheme supported and enhanced its surroundings. Building in Context does not mean following any particular approach like ‘fitting in’ or ‘contrasting with’. Instead it requires rigorous and sometimes inspired bespoke design work.
This masterclass will help you to examine and discuss the challenges and rewards of building in context. The speakers are renowned architects and designers with many successful schemes under their belts. Come along and find out how they did it and learn how to assess and negotiate to achieve better schemes in your area.
